Loose gemstones can be either natural or genuine. Natural stones are not treated and are offered for sale in the same state as they come out of the ground, except for the fact they're cut. Genuine stones are those that have been treated to enhance their characteristics either through heat, radiation or oiling/waxing. Needless to say, natural gemstones with exceptional color or clarity tend to be more expensive.
