The world's fourth oldest auction house in continuous operation, Sotheby’s, holds regular luxury watch auctions in Geneva, London and New York, however, this autumn the world's most active collectors and connoisseurs of horology will come to Hong Kong to visit Sotheby’s Hong Kong Important Watches Autumn Sale 2010 on 6 October. The sale will offer a total of 300 lots estimated over 3.5 million GBP ($5.5 million USD). Presenting a an outstanding private collection of highly sophisticated timepieces by renowned independent watchmakers, as well as dazzling bejewelled watches in perfect condition, the Hong Kong Important Watches Autumn Sale 2010 is a real pinnacle of the past and future of watchmaking.
The star lot of the luxurious and stunning jewellery watches offered in the sale is the magnificent Piaget white gold and diamond-set oval bracelet watch. Featuring 83.89 carats of emerald-cut diamonds, all meticulously selected, hand-cut and positioned by Piaget’s master craftsmen, this dazzling timepiece is expected to fetch 320.000 GBP (500.000 USD). Some of the other highlights of the sale include a Patek Philippe platinum perpetual calendar chronograph wristwatch ( the REF 5971P) with moon-phases and leap-year indication, encrusted with4.39 carats of baguette diamonds (148.000 GBP/230.000 USD), and a Cartier diamond-set jadeite, coral, onyx, mother-of-pearl and rock crystal mystery clock (116.000 GBP/180.000 USD).
The top lot of the mechanical wonders of the sale is a Greubel Forsey platinum tourbillon wristwatch. Featuring a new patented double tourbillon system, 72 hour power reserve and mother-of-pearl dial, Double Tourbillon 30º Vision No. 2 is the result of four years of combined effort of renowned independent watchmakers Robert Greubel and Stephen Forsey. Being a decisive technical advance and milestone in watchmaking history, the timepiece is estimated at 190.000 GBP (300.000 USD). Among other mechanical creations of the sale is a Richard Mille platinum split seconds chronograph tourbillon wristwatch, carrying the price tag of 130.000 GBP (200.000 USD).
