Certified Diamonds

HEADING_TITLE
Anyone shopping for a loose diamond would want to be sure that they are purchasing a genuine diamond with all the brilliant attributes a jewellery shop claims it has. Therefore, in order to ensure confidence in diamond buying public, prior to putting diamonds on sale, jewellers send them to independent diamond certification authorities who specialise in evaluating carat, clarity, colour, etc. of diamonds. After examination, the diamonds are returned, each with an unbiased certificate, stating its characteristics. Basically, certification is a blueprint of a diamond as well as your best assurance of quality.

It is important to bear in mind that appraisals are not the same thing as certified diamond quality reports issued by authoritative gemological laboratories. Appraisals may be inaccurate, as they are often done by a salesperson, who may not even have the necessary knowledge and training to qualify for the task. The appraisal is only the opinion of the appraiser and is no guarantee of quality. So if you're buying a loose uncertified diamond, the odds are you will pay too much for it.

There are a number of internationally recognised gemological laboratories, the most respected of which being GIA (the Gemological Institute of America), AGSL (the American Gem Society Laboratories) and EGL (European Gemological Institute). In fact, it was GIA that created the Four Cs, the international diamond evaluation standards. But because there are a lot of diamond grading labs, many of them have their own criteria and methods of grading loose diamonds, differing in their standards and levels of strictness. However, all authoritative gemological laboratories operate within a complex set of parameters with regard to grading diamonds, to eliminate any doubt about credibility of their certification. The inconsistencies in their reports often result from the diamonds being on the line between two grades.

Long story short, if you want true peace of mind when buying a diamond, we highly recommend that you check with the retailer whether the diamond is certified by an independent professional diamond grading organisation. If it's not, ask to see those that come with a certificate or go to another retailer.
