How to Care for Diamond Earrings

Diamond earrings are one of the most popular pieces of jewellery in anyone’s possession, and it’s easy to see why. With their versatility, the ability to dress up an outfit, sparkling elegance and other qualities, diamond earrings have proven their popularity over time. So naturally, caring for these pieces is very important to ensure they sparkle for a lifetime.

The basics of diamond cleaning are very simple. Fill a bowl with warm, mildly soapy water and put your earrings in the bowl for about ten minutes, perhaps fifteen if this is the first time you have ever cleaned them. After they have soaked for a while, find a soft bristled brush and gently scrub them. It is important not to use hard bristles, as this can damage your earring settings and metal. If necessary, carefully use a toothpick or a waterpick to clean the diamond if you notice especially difficult pieces of dirt to remove. If the pieces seem too difficult to clean without doing damage to your piece, contact a jeweller and have the piece professionally cleaned. After the piece is cleaned, gently pat dry with a clean, lint free cloth and store.

Regular cleaning is important for diamonds, because they get dirty from a variety of sources. Lotion, oils from fingers, and other irritants can gather at the base of the diamond and create a gunk that keeps light from filtering through the panels and creating that well known shine and brilliance. Make sure your earrings are not loosely stored in your jewellery box. If they rub against other jewellery – or even each other – the diamonds can scratch and nick other pieces of jewellery. Take care and your jewellery will give you a lifetime of beauty.
