How to Care for Diamond Engagement Rings

Now that your beautiful and precious engagement ring is on your finger, keeping it shining brilliantly and free of damage is the next important task. Here are some tips for keeping your sparkler just as stunning as the day you received it.

Everyday use will cause your diamond to become dull. Between hand lotions, sanitizers, household work and other daily use, your diamond is under assault from a variety of sources. This gunk builds up on the diamond, rendering it lifeless, since light cannot shine through and create that sparkle.

First, soak your ring in warm water with a mild detergent. Next, take a soft brush and gently clean the stone. You want soft bristles, because while diamonds are very hard, the metal of the ring itself or other setting arrangements may be damaged by hard bristles. After you have gently scrubbed the ring, put it back into the mild detergent and rinse it gently. Pat dry with a soft cloth. If your diamond is especially in need of cleaning, you can carefully use a toothpick or waterpick to push dirt away from the diamond.

If your diamond has other gemstones in the setting, clean these based on the most delicate stone first, although the above method should be sufficient for them as well. Be very careful when using ammonia or other cleaning products designed to clean diamonds that have not been fracture filled. They may make diamonds that have been fracture filled cloudy or damage precious gemstones. When in doubt, always ask an expert about the particulars of your ring.
