Why Are Diamonds Used In Engagement Rings?

Even though some people are using precious gems such as emeralds as the centrepiece for their engagement rings, diamonds are unquestionably the stone of choice. Where does this tradition come from? What are you really saying when you give a diamond?

Giving a ring as a symbol of engagement is an ancient practice followed by many cultures. Diamonds, however, didn’t enter the scene until 1477, when the Archduke of Austria, Maximillian, wanted to impress his fiancée Mary of Burgundy. When Mary got her rock, it sparked a trend with diamonds that continues to this day. There are many reasons why diamonds are used for engagement rings.

First, they automatically show both luxury and investment. Buying a diamond ring can be a pricey affair, and it symbolizes that the giver of the ring hasn’t taken this idea lightly. Putting your money where your mouth is, so to speak, a diamond ring screams how much you are treasured and appreciated. While no one makes the mistake of thinking the bigger the rock the bigger the commitment, there is no question that buying a diamond ring is solid proof of commitment.

Second, diamonds themselves are a beautiful symbol of what might be. Diamonds are the hardest natural substance on earth. While they can be chipped or broken, it takes quite a lot to do so. Diamonds are used in industrial tools to cut away other material. Such a stone can come to represent a long lasting, enduring relationship – one that can take many nicks and still shine beautifully or a relationship that can “cut through” anything else to stand the test of time. Whether as a symbol of luxury or eternity, diamonds say love like nothing else can!
