Coloured Diamonds- The Rarest and Most Expensive Stones on Earth.image

Why are coloured diamonds so expensive?

It might be the fact that they are some of the rarest stones on earth. These stones are coveted for their rarity and beauty but there are only so many of them to go around.

The Science

Coloured diamonds come in a variety of colours. The colour of the stones comes when they are forming underground. The colour of the diamond is dependent upon the type of mineral deposit that was around when the diamond was forming. Some stones have a lot of deeply intense colour, and some stones have just a trace of colour.

Pink Diamonds

The Argyle Pink, one of the world’s rarest coloured diamonds, is the pink diamond. Most pink diamonds come from the Argyle mine, which produces 95% of the diamonds in circulation in the world. However, not all diamonds from the Argyle mine have diamonds that are pink in colour.

Of all of the stones that are mined in the Argyle mine, less than one tenth of one percent is classified as being pink. Pink stones from the Argyle mine are favored because of the intense pink colour. Stones from this mine range from the lightest of pink to a deep raspberry pink.

Pink diamonds mined in other countries usually have a lighter pink tinge than those that come from the Argyle mine. There are also diamonds mined in the Argyle mine which are white with a secondary pink colour that cost even more per carat than solid pink diamonds.

There are also other coloured diamonds which are popular such as champagne diamonds. These diamonds come in a variety of colours ranging from light tan shades to that of a deep cognac.

Yellow Diamonds

Yellow diamonds can come in a range of colours from a pale, light yellow to a deep rich golden canary colour. The Argyle mine does produce some yellow diamonds.

Blue Diamonds

Blue diamonds can be as light and pale as the sky after it rains or they can be as deep and rich as the sky at twilight. The blue diamond can be an absolutely stunning steely blue colour that is similar to the colour of a sapphire.

Green diamonds

Green diamonds are also found in some diamond mines. However, the colour of green diamonds is usually not very intense. These diamonds are very rare indeed.

The price of coloured diamonds depends upon the four Cs. Colour, clarity, cut, and carats determine the exact price of a coloured diamond. These are the same standards that white diamonds are measured by. However, with regards to coloured diamonds, when grading colour it is the strength and saturation of colours that command the higher dollars. This is contrary to white diamonds as colour in white diamonds is considered a flaw.
